A message from the festival director Elizabeth Shepherd:

I'm thrilled to announce this year's line-up of films and programs for the 3rd Annual Children's Film Festival Seattle! This year's festival will be our biggest and boldest ever, with 88 films from all over the world and three exciting, hands-on workshops for kids. There is something for every child's imagination this year: fantastic fairy tales, eye-popping animation, gripping adventure, amazing documentaries, and lots of stories that tackle important issues from a kids-eye view.

Animation, as always, is a cornerstone of Children's Film Festival Seattle, and this year, our animation programs are an embarrassment of riches! We'll be presenting Lotte Reiniger's 1926 silent film masterpiece, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, with a brand new musical score composed and performed live by renowned Seattle musical duo Miles and Karina, who are sure to take you on a magical and musical carpet ride through The Arabian Nights. We're also offering two other special animation programs: a retrospective of films by the world-famous claymation king Will Vinton (who will be in attendance the second weekend of our festival!) and a program of brand-new animation from the national cinema of Sweden. These exquisite, meticulous, hand-drawn and stop-motion films are sure to dazzle and delight.

There are more feature films than ever this year, including two outstanding new films from Germany: a thrilling and evocative new version of Hansel and Gretel, and The Robber Hotzenplotz, a hilarious and fantasy-filled adaptation of the legendary children's books of the same name. Another fine feature from Canada, Luna: Spirit of a Whale, tells the moving true-life story of Luna, an orphaned Orca who was adopted by an indigenous tribe. This film is sure to have special resonance with Seattle audiences, who always have an eye out for majestic Orca visitors to our waters.

Filmmakers from the Northwest are represented at the 2008 Festival by Wes Kim, who will share his brand new Northwest Film Forum Signature Short, Cookies for Sale, and Josh Staub, who has won numerous award for his luminous animated film, A Mantis Parable.

Films about animals are always favorites at Children's Film Festival Seattle, and this year our cinematic stable of stars includes dogs, giraffes, rabbits, whales, pigs, grizzlies, goldfish, oragutans, hens, mice, birds, snakes, turtles, and even an adorable goldfish! Many of these critters can be found in a 50 minute program especially created for the Festival's youngest viewers, Four-Legged, Finned, and Furry Friends.

Young festival-goers will also have a chance to meet and greet visiting filmmakers and stars, including the Lara Jo Regan, the director of Big Top Winkle, a delightful short film featuring the considerable charms of her real-life pooch companion, Mr. Winkle. Teen filmmaker Stephen Sotor will also be on hand to discuss his film, Peace, which features children from all over the world talking about their visions for world peace.

And as always at Children's Film Festival Seattle, kids will have a chance to delve deeper into moviemaking through three workshops. Seattle filmmaker SJ Chiro will lead young people in making the trailer for Children's Film Festival 2009; animator Lisa Wardle will be at the helm of the worksop, Lego Zombie Attack: The Movie, and Craig Downing will help kids tell the story of a Pacific Northwest legend in Lights, Camera, Legend! To sign up and find out more about workshops, contact Dave Hanagan at 206.329.2629 or dave@nwfilmforum.org

Finally, kids will be the all-important decision makers on the Festival's Children's Jury. Ten lucky kids will be selected to see a selection of films and award prizes in several categories. To find out more about the Children's Jury, contact Liz Shepherd at liz@nwfilmforum.org

So mark your calendars now for all this excitement, wonder and learning that is Children's Film Festival Seattle 2008! We'll be eager to greet children of all ages January 25-February 3, at Northwest Film Forum! In our dark and cozy cinemas, you'll find a whole new world of moving images, and rediscover the magic of a day at the movies.
