About

In this most ambitious work of a filmmaker constantly knocking through the barriers of his own outer limits, director/dancer/choreographer extraordinaire Bob Fosse (1927–1987) tells his own life story. Through the manic character of Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), we experience the world of a workaholic theater director addicted to speed, Vivaldi, Alka-Seltzer, and sex. As Gideon struggles to choreograph his latest show and avoid the beautiful Angel of Death (Jessica Lange), we’re treated to a breathtaking series of hallucinatory production numbers including probably the only cinematic musical number set during open-heart surgery. All That Jazz is a wonder—funny, harrowing, touching, and 100 percent exhilarating.

“Fosse’s perfectionist sense rivals Kubrick’s, all with a dancer’s delicate sense of time and space. All That Jazz reaches the audience in all the places they like to be touched: the eyes, ears and genitals. Fosse and his doppelganger Roy Scheider twist flash, trash and populist sensibility into some of the most personal, formally audacious cinema inside the mainstream.” – Bret Berg
