In 2011 Taipei, Vicki reflects on her life at the turn of the century as an aimless party girl. Her jealous, drug-addled boyfriend drives her away into a seemingly platonic relationship with Jack, an older man. Jack’s mafia connections force him to visit Japan and he suggests that she follow. The sole contemporary-set feature of this retrospective is one of Hou’s most beautifully shot films—a ghostly story of ennui and regret.

“Mambo is a ghost story, but what has died is more than a single soul—rather, history, memory, a sense of being and belonging.”—James Quandt, Artforum.
