(Ruben Amar and Lola Bessis, United States, 2013, DCP, 95 min)

Seattle premiere!

Inspired by New York filmmakers Jim Jarmusch, John Cassavetes and Spike Lee, and by their own experiences of the city, French filmmakers Ruben Amar and Lola Bessis have crafted a delightfully engrossing domestic drama for their feature debut.

Leeward and Mary are a young married couple at a crossroads. The two can’t agree on anything—even what to name their three-year old daughter. Enter Lilas (co-director Bessis), a 19 year-old French artist trying to make it in New York and escape the shadow of her famous painter mother. How will the three pursue personal and artistic fulfilment in the city that never sleeps?

"Charm appears to be the special ingredient of this pretty little film" —The Stranger

"rather than espouse the cliché that creative expression can save your life, the first-time filmmakers subtly counteract it by making their protagonist a hipster Peter Pan whose creative expression is an excuse not to grow up." —Slant Magazine

"it has something to say about the difficulty of reconciling the romanticized bohemian lifestyle with the less glamorous nuts and bolts of raising a family" —Film.com
