March 6-12, 2009

Presented by Northwest Film Forum and AIGA-Seattle
Sponsored by Digital Kitchen

The annual ByDesign program at Northwest Film Forum explores bold ideas in design and the moving image, and celebrates multidisciplinary artists who combine forms and transform our visual culture.

ByDesign 09 examines the art and craft of motion graphics with special guests including MK12 (the artists behind the title sequence for Quantum of Solace) and Digital Kitchen (responsible for the sequence of HBO's True Blood). Digital artists Son Of Rose and Iller Aint create syneshtesia through their inventive live audio-visual performances at the free opening night event on March 6 at 8:30pm.

The Entropy program and the latest PSST! Pass It On project (experimental films based on the idea of Dali's Exquisite Corpse) showcase new short films by artists, animators and designers from around the globe.

ByDesign will also present the Northwest premieres of two new feature-length documentaries, one about legendary graphic designer Milton Glaser (shown with a short film on designer Paul Rand) and the other about visionary architect Rem Koolhaas, designer of Seattle’s Public Library building.

Says Program Curator Peter Lucas, “Design and cinema have always been combinative and collaborative disciplines. It’s really interesting to look at the various overlaps and connections of the two, and to see the interdisciplinary work that is coming out of this fascinating nexus. I think that the work shown in ByDesign points to future forms of art and communication.”
